Dirty Dog Live .com presented a day of some of our area's finest entertainers at the Crawford County Fair on Monday, August 23rd, 2010.
Entitled "An American Jam", this was an historic ground-breaking event for the musical entertainers in Crawford County. It was the first time a local act headlined on the main stage at the Fair, and also in the company of fellow local professional bands for a full day of music, comedy, and dance.
Crawford County is blessed with some of the finest talent you will find anywhere in the country. Remember, every national act was once a local act in their hometown. Being "discovered" as a national talent is something that happens to only a few of many, many fine bands. The bands we presented are yet "unsigned" by a national label, but are exciting and fun, with original music, and some with great cover tunes everyone loves.
The day's events were wonderful. Everyone had fun gathering and participating in the event. Once the weather cleared we were able to present the show without a hitch.
I am so proud of the participating musicians, the dancers, the emcee/comedian, and all of the back stage production that helped to make the show wonderful. Professional to the core, these people gave some of the finest moments of their collective careers, whether it was onstage or backstage. We also want to thank the people who came to share the day with us, braving the cold and wet weather, and those who came just to support their favorite artists that day. Your participation was valued beyond words. Unfortunately, the show attendance was not what we had hoped for, which leaves me quite disappointed in many ways. An audience can never be predicted, as many factors influence the ability of people to attend a show. However, in this instance we organized something that the general public had been requesting from the Fair Board for many years. ~They asked for lower prices and we gave them an affordable show.
~They asked for Rock and Roll instead of Country, and we gave them Rock and Roll.
~They asked for Christian music, and we gave them beautiful gospel tunes sung by some of the most Heavenly voices in Crawford County.
~We gave them Bluegrass, and Country, and Blues, and Jazz, Folk, and Festival music, and many genres that should have appealed to an audience of every age, gender, but still, many did not come and enjoy the day with us all.
The general public and attendance can not be predicted.
But what disappoints me most is that I expected to see the local musicians out there supporting each other, as this event was not only the first opportunity, but the testing grounds for many years to come.
I did see a few familiar faces in the crowd, but those musicians and musical artists who did not attend (without a valid reason) should be ashamed of themselves.
I took a lot of heat for making the choices I did when picking bands for this show. And I know not everyone who is talented was able to be included this first year. However, after seeing how poorly those selected were supported, I am more convinced than ever that I chose correctly, as I see now that it is not the love of the art of music that motivated so many of you, but only the desire to be in the spotlight for yourselves.
This was not a popularity contest, it was not an American Idol competition. This was not the "Lisa Bower Show" as my name was not even on the event.
~This was an opportunity given to all local musicians by the Crawford County Fair Board.
~It was an opportunity for the future of local music and the performance arts to be showcased in Crawford County. ~This was a performance opportunity ~the big stage ~to deserving bands and talent throughout our region. ~And had it been well attended, this was an opportunity to perhaps feature local talent as an annual event at future Crawford County Fairs, and for fairs across the State of Pennsylvania.
The low attendance did not phase our "stars" that evening. They had a great time, lived the experience, gave one hell of a performance, were treated with the utmost respect and considerations that they deserved, and the buzz backstage was exhilarating. We had a great time and represented our county with pride.
I've been to bars where these same musicians (and the emcee) have performed for an audience of three, with duct-taped microphones and speakers, little amplifiers, and still gave those three people one great show. The Crawford County Fair allowed our performers to present with some of the best sound equipment and sound men in the region, as well as many other production opportunities. And the level of talent our people presented was outstanding.
By not attending the American Jam, you not only missed a great show, but you only hurt yourselves. The Crawford County Fair is a business, and they are in the business of making money like any other business. Coming out to support this opportunity was a vote of support for all musicians, as well as a big thank you to the Board for opening up their business to you as a top paying venue for the future.
The participating bands were paid well and fairly for their time, and we all had a great day. We will also hold in our hearts the history of having been the first group to enjoy this opportunity.
I hope the Fair Board will recognize how much talent is here, and perhaps give us another chance to showcase another local group next year, but because of your lack of interest, if they do, it will be a grand gesture indeed.
Dirty Dog Live .com has been a free service to the musicians and the community for nearly three years now. I will continue to support local music, and provide opportunities to those who are interested in our services, and again, I thank all who helped make our event successful., and a special thank you to the Fair Board for everything. -Lisa Dirty Dog Live .com |
